Road Safety in Thailand 

General traffic rules

• Driving on the left side of the road is the norm in Thailand.

• Everyone riding in the car, even those in the back seats, needs to buckle up.

​

• Unless a hands-free device is being used, it is not permitted to use a mobile phone while driving.

• Children who are younger than 12 years old or who are shorter than 4 feet 9 inches (145 cm) are required to be securely restrained.

• When there is little visibility or nighttime, headlights should be used.

• For commercial or newly licenced drivers, the legal blood alcohol content (BAC) level is 0.02%; for drivers, it is 0.05%.

             Speed limits

• Urban areas: 60 km/h (37 mph)

• Rural roads: 90 km/h (56 mph)

​

• Highways: 120 km/h (75 mph)

Fines

• Speeding: 5–25 EUR or 200–1,000 THB

• Failing to use a seat belt: 500 THB (around 13 EUR).

• Driving while using a cell phone: 400–1,000 THB (10–25 EUR)

• Parking infractions: 5–25 EUR or 200–1,000 THB

• Running a red light: 13–25 EUR or 500–1,000 THB

• Drunk driving: fines of 5,000–20,000 THB (125–500 EUR), as well as potential jail time or licence suspension

• Children under the age of thirteen (13 EUR): 500 THB

• The fines can be paid online via official government websites or in person at the closest police station.
